Terms of Service
1. Who we are and acceptance of these terms
This website, thepeoplesdefender.com, is operated by JB Brown Criminal Trial Practice, LLC, doing business as The People’s Defender (“the Firm,” “we,” “us”). By using this site, you agree to these Terms of Use and to our Privacy Policy. If you do not agree, please do not use the site.
2. Attorney advertising
This website is a communication about legal services and is governed by Rules 7.1 through 7.3 of the Alabama Rules of Professional Conduct. The attorney responsible for its content is Jonathan “JB” Brown, whose office is at 2201 4th Avenue North, Level 2, Birmingham, Alabama 35203. Choosing a lawyer is an important decision that should not be based on advertising alone. You may ask us for free written information about our lawyers’ qualifications and experience.
3. Information only, not legal advice
The material on this site is general information about criminal law and procedure. It is not legal advice, and it may not reflect the latest changes in the law or apply to your situation. Every criminal case turns on its own facts, the court, and the charge. Do not act, or decide not to act, based on anything here without talking to a lawyer about your specific case.
4. No attorney-client relationship until we agree in writing
Visiting this site, calling us, submitting a form, sending an email, or having a free consultation does not make you our client. An attorney-client relationship begins only when you and the Firm sign a written engagement agreement. Until then, we have not agreed to represent you and are not monitoring any deadline for you.
Criminal cases carry strict deadlines for bond hearings, discovery, preliminary hearings, and appeals, and some are only days long. If you have been charged or are under investigation, do not wait on a website inquiry. Call us at 205-671-2026 or contact another lawyer right away.
5. What you send us
We treat information from people seeking representation as confidential, as Rule 1.18 of the Alabama Rules of Professional Conduct requires. Even so, please do not send details of the facts of your case through a web form, text, email, or social media message before you have spoken with one of our attorneys. We may need to check for conflicts first, and if we have a conflict, we may be unable to consult with you.
Please also know:
- Jail and prison calls, messages, and video visits are usually recorded and can be reviewed by law enforcement. Do not discuss your case over them, even with us, except on a line the facility designates as a confidential attorney line.
- Communications with family members or other third parties about your case may not be privileged. Family members who contact us on your behalf should share only what is needed to schedule a consultation.
- Email and web forms are not fully secure. By using them, you accept that risk.
6. Case results and testimonials
Case results on this site describe matters our lawyers have handled. Each was decided on its own facts, law, and court. Prior results do not guarantee or predict a similar outcome in any other case, and nothing on this site promises a particular result. Some results may have been obtained by our lawyers before they joined the Firm or while working with co-counsel.
Reviews and testimonials come from clients or others with direct personal experience with our lawyers. They describe that person’s experience and are not a prediction of yours.
7. Awards and recognitions
Awards, ratings, badges, and listings shown on this site were issued by the organizations named, using their own selection criteria, to the lawyer or Firm identified with each. They are not endorsements by the Alabama State Bar or any court. We will explain the basis for any recognition on request.
8. Licensure, offices, and where we practice
Unless a lawyer’s profile states otherwise, our lawyers are licensed to practice law only in Alabama. Some are admitted in federal courts, as noted on their profiles. We do not seek to represent anyone based on this site in a jurisdiction where it does not comply with local rules.
Our practice is limited to criminal defense. The Alabama State Bar does not certify lawyers as specialists except through organizations approved by its Board of Legal Specialization. Unless a profile names such a certification, no lawyer at the Firm claims to be a certified specialist.
Our offices are located at:
- Birmingham: 2201 4th Avenue North, Level 2, Birmingham, Alabama 35203
- Huntsville: 221 Longwood Drive SW, Huntsville, Alabama 35801
- Mobile: 205 St. Emanuel Street, Mobile, Alabama 36602
9. Relationship with Alexander Shunnarah Trial Attorneys
JB Brown Criminal Trial Practice, LLC and Alexander Shunnarah Trial Attorneys are separate law firms. References on this site to the Firm being “powered by” Alexander Shunnarah Trial Attorneys describe the technology, resources, and support that firm makes available to us. Criminal defense matters are handled by the lawyers of JB Brown Criminal Trial Practice, LLC. Contacting Alexander Shunnarah Trial Attorneys does not create an attorney-client relationship with this Firm, and contacting this Firm does not create one with Alexander Shunnarah Trial Attorneys.
10. Fees, free consultations, and financing
Your first consultation is free. Fees for representation are set in a written engagement agreement after we review your case. Nothing on this site is a quote. Fees for legal services do not include court costs, fines, bond, or other expenses unless your agreement says so.
Pay Later financing, described on our Payment Options page, is provided by Affirm and its lending partners, not the Firm. It is subject to their approval and terms. See affirm.com/lenders.
11. Calls, texts, and email
We contact people only in response to their own inquiry. By giving us your phone number or email address through this site, you agree that we may call, text, or email you about your inquiry, including by automated means. Message and data rates may apply. Reply STOP to stop texts, or tell us at any time that you do not want to be contacted. Consent is not a condition of hiring us.
12. Cookies, tracking, and advertising technology
This site uses cookies, tags, and similar tools to operate the site, measure visits, and support our advertising, which may include showing our ads to you on other websites. You can block or delete cookies through your browser settings, although some parts of the site may not work as intended. We never use what you tell us about your case to target advertising. See our Privacy Policy for details.
13. Third-party links and content
This site links to and displays content from others, such as Google reviews, rating and award organizations, Affirm, YouTube, and social media platforms. We do not control those sites, and their own terms and privacy policies govern your use of them.
14. Intellectual property
The site’s text, video, graphics, logos, and the names “The People’s Defender” and “JB Brown Criminal Trial Practice” belong to the Firm or its licensors. You may view and print pages for personal, noncommercial use. Any other copying, republishing, or reuse requires our written permission.
15. Acceptable use
Do not use this site to break the law, send false information, harass anyone, disrupt or probe the site’s security, or collect data from it by automated means.
16. No warranties
This site is provided “as is.” We try to keep it accurate and current, but we do not guarantee that it is complete, error-free, or uninterrupted.
17. Limitation of liability
To the extent the law allows, the Firm is not liable for any damages arising from your use of, or inability to use, this website. This section concerns use of the website only. It does not limit any duty the Firm owes to a client under an engagement agreement or the Alabama Rules of Professional Conduct.
18. Governing law
These terms are governed by Alabama law. Any dispute about this website will be heard in the state or federal courts sitting in Jefferson County, Alabama.
19. Changes to these terms
We may update these terms. The date at the top of this page shows the latest version, which takes effect when posted.
20. Contact
